Newspaper clippings, abstract:

Below there is a selection of newspaper clippings. There was media interest in her dissertation from 1976: “Determination and Structure of Salaries in the Government Sector of Sweden” even before her dissertation defense which took place on March 29, 1976 and was attended by about 100 people. One article is published in the white collar union (TCO) member journal in 1973. An interview with Gustafsson in the Journal “Personaltjänst” in 1976 spells out her plans to try and find data to calculate effects of years on the labor market on wages. Child care costs was a much debated issue in the 1970s and 1980s. Gustafsson argued that one should ask “What does the lack of child care cost”? Life long losses on career development from being a housewife should be weighed against the costs of a preschool slot during six years. This reasoning was even presented in a fashion journal “Damernas Värld” in 1978. In the summer of 1979 Gustafsson was an editorial writer of “Dagens Nyheter” An objection to her child care costs arguments comes from “Helsingborgs Dagblad” arguing that this summer girl does not know what she his talking about. is part time work good or bad for the pursuit of gender equality? Gustafsson argues based on dissertation work by Marianne Pettersson (Sundström) that the alternative for a part time working mother was not full time work but no market work. In 1985 after five years of work Gustafsson finished her book about her own research and that of Petra Lantz for a wider public of non economists. The book was presented in 33 newspapers all over Sweden and there was a large demand for her time. An article in “Fredrika Bremerförbundet´s” journal “Hertha” presents Gustafsson and 7 other women with the title: “The women who could reign Sweden” But Gustafsson did not want to be a politician but a researcher and therefore declined offers to present her work. In 1986 Gustafsson travelled with the first Jämställdhetsombudet for Sweden, Inga-Britt Törnell, to Bern on initiative by the Swedish Embassy. Swiss German speaking newspapers published widely about this seminar. In 1988 Giséle Asplund started a journal called “Kvinnor och Ekonomi”. This journal published a series of interviews with Gustafsson about her research. In September of 1989 Gustafsson became a professor at the universiteit van Amsterdam and newspaper clippings in Dutch talk about her activities. Her inaugural lecture is noted, several articles appeared in students journals. In 1998 Gustafsson is invited by the Swedish minister of finance Erik Åsbrink, to be one of the speakers at the social democratic party ´s press meeting in Almedalen where she speaks about the success of the Dutch economy at the time in combining businesses need for flexibility with job security for the workers by use of manpower firms. The Dutch called it “flexicurity”.
